American Red Cross - Muskegon Site

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated station sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide support for preventative healthcare services by assisting in the distribution of necessary healthcare products. 

Time Commitment: Minimum of 1 hour per week - one shift per month to stay active.

Volunteer Service Activities: 

To safely transport blood from collection sites to the lab for processing and/or deliver blood or blood to hospital customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transport blood from the collection site to Red Cross laboratory
  • Transport finished blood or blood products to hospital customers as routine or “stat” deliveries
  • Pick up empty boxes from hospitals as necessary
  • Deliver supplies to blood collection sites as needed
  • Complete required paperwork and obtain signatures as necessary
  • Communicate with Red Cross staff on feedback from customers or any urgent issues
  • Drive in a safe and responsible manner as a representative of the American Red Cross

Volunteer Skills & Attributes:

  • Willingness to support the Red Cross mission
  • Valid state driver’s license and three years of driving experience
  • Familiarity with geographic area and driving routes
  • Able to verify safe driving record (MVR)
  • Current insurance and state registration required if using own vehicle
  • Ability to lift 45 lbs.
  • Successful completion of American Red Cross Defensive Driving course upon acceptance in position

American Red Cross - Muskegon Site

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated station sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide support for preventative healthcare services by assisting in the collection and management of necessary healthcare products. 

Time Commitment: Minimum of 6-8 hour shift per month - to stay active

Volunteer Service Activities: 

To provide excellent and enthusiastic customer service to enhance the blood donor experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet donors, explain donation process and assist their the blood donation process
  • Manage donor flow at temp taking, screen donors for permitted access
  • Provide donors with relevant information and answer questions as necessary
  • Provide customer service to donors in the Hospitality Area
  • Report possible adverse post-donation physical reactions to staff
  • Set up and maintain cleanliness in reception, hospitality and donor areas as requested
  • Work with collections team supervisor, or charge staff, to match donor’s blood type 
  • Promote upcoming donation information
  • Make reminder/cancellation calls and reschedule donor appointments

Qualifications:

  • Must be willing to volunteer with 72 hours of initial contact from Blood Services Scheduler.

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health AmeriCorps Seniors” will serve at designated station sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide services to clients resulting in greater access to healthy food and increased food security and help to provide other basic needs.

Time Commitment: Varies & Flexible - A minimum of 2 hours per month

Volunteer Service Activities: 

  • Assist in maximizing access to food and nutritional information through Food Truck support and other collections/donation activities
  • Assist in maximizing access to other basic needs
  • Assist in outreach activities to educate the community in healthy, educational, and income stability opportunities

Service Activity: Cultural Heritage

Description of Allowable Service Activities: Cultural Heritage RSVP volunteers will provide direct service or support at eleven non-profit organizations through a variety of tasks including office support, providing tours, being museum docents, conducting community outreach, public event staff/support, scheduling, researching, compiling, and distributing education materials.

Time Commitment: 

Regular service as determined by Frauenthal volunteer program
 

Volunteer Service Activities: 

Provide support to expand and enhance the organizations ability to be a place of quality entertainment for West Michigan.

Muskegon YMCA - Muskegon Site

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated station sites (food banks, pantries, distribution centers, emergency kitchens and shelters) in Muskegon County to help increase the capacity of the agency to provide services to clients resulting in greater access to healthy food and increased food security. 

Time Commitment: 

2 hours per week minimum
Day/Time: Thursday and Friday weekly, time to be determined
 

Volunteer Service Activities: 

To work with a group of approximately eight volunteers preparing meals for Muskegon County students to take home each Friday, for evening and weekend meals, ensuring food security which will allow students to learn and grow in healthy spirit, mind and body.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Have understanding, and empathy, with Muskegon families faced with the challenge of feeding their children
  • Assist in maximizing access to food and nutritional information through distribution, collections and donation activities
  • Package food from bulk sources to individual quantities
  • Bundle individual quantities of healthy meals, readying them for distribution
  • Prep, clean up, break down, etc. as needed
  • Perform all other functions relating to the Food Distribution program as needed

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated station sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide services to clients resulting in greater access to healthy food and increased food security. 

Time Commitment: Minimum of 2-hour time block, one day per week

Volunteer Service Activities: 

Volunteers efficiently help clients through the steps and procedures for participation in the program, sort and organize the pantry and assist clients while shopping.

Key Responsibilities:

Food Pantry Greeter/Receptionist
  • Greet walk-in clients and direct them to the appropriate area, department, etc.

  • Ensure food pantry clients list name on the sign-in sheet upon arrival

  • Provide clients with preliminary paperwork to complete while in the waiting area

Food Drive Worker
  • Provide support for a variety of tasks (i.e. sorting, collection, etc.)
Food Pantry Worker
  • Bagging and putting out baked goods, fresh produce, and other donations as they are received
  • Putting away food pantry orders and donations
  • After the interview, assist clients with “shopping” in the pantry

Kids' Food Basket

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated station sites (food banks, pantries, distribution centers, emergency kitchens and shelters) in Muskegon County to help increase the capacity of the agency to provide services to clients resulting in greater access to healthy food and increased food security. 

Time Commitment: Varies and Flexible - 1-1.5 hours per week minimum

Volunteer Service Activities: 

To work with a group of 15-30 volunteers making sandwiches, and repacking other healthy snacks, for over 1,200 children to take home, after school, ensuring they have an evening meal Monday through Friday.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Packing/preparing Sack Suppers

  • Food Preparation (open food prep and re-packaging)

Service Activity: Providing Services

Day/Time: Monday, Wednesday or Friday - 12:45-2:45 p.m., or as determined by Mission for Area People staff

Working with a small group of 3-4 volunteers to sort and organize clothing or food as necessary.

To assist local fire departments, and your community, to educate and install free smoke alarms for residents to help reduce fire fatalities by 25%.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with local fire department
  • Inspect home smoke alarms
  • Install up to three smoke alarms per home
  • Attend necessary free training
  • Learn necessary information to educate the operation and safety of alarm

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated stations sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide support for preventative healthcare services by distributing meals to seniors resulting in greater access to healthy food.  

Time Commitment: 1.5 - 2.5 hours per shift (9:00 - 11:00 AM - each route varies)

Provide support to AgeWell Services by helping to transport meals to hundreds of seniors each day in Muskegon County.

Service Activity: Distributing Information

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated stations sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide support for preventative healthcare services and assist individuals who are engaging in lifestyle changes by distributing health information, nutrition information, wellness education information, exercise information and/or education. 

Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week (2-4 Clients per Week) 

Volunteer Service Activities: 

Provide support to CALL 2-1-1 through the Telephone Reassurance Volunteer program.

  • The volunteer will engage in telephone communication with Muskegon & Oceana County older adults to help alleviate loneliness and isolation.

Time Commitment: Varies and Flexible - A minimum of 4 hours

Service Activity: Cultural Heritage

Assists the Collections/Archive Department through artifact preservation, research, and in general by maintaining the Museum’s vast collection.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Become familiar with the Collections Center and Archive policies and procedures

  • Prepare objects for upcoming exhibits

Volunteer Service Activities: 

Assist the Programming Department with all things Education including working in the STEM Center interacting with visitors, assisting Friday Family Fun nights, school groups, and other programming or education activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructing visitors on program activities
  • Clean/organizing STEM Center after school groups leave
  • Aiding self-guided school groups find their way through the exhibits
  • Engaging visitors about interactive exhibit pieces
  • Provide a great guest experience by adopting a “visitor first” attitude

2-4 hours during Museum Hours or for special events and programs hours are flexible

Volunteer Service Activities: 

Provide visitors with information by answering guest questions, giving directions, assisting in ticket sales or other duties during larger Museum programs and events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Put visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs
  • Survey guests on their experience by using provided resources
  • Become familiar with the galleries and exhibits at the Lakeshore Museum Center
  • Monitor the safety of the sites and their visitors
  • Communicate effectively with guest relations and front office staff to alert of a possible security issue
  • Assist with programs and evens as needed

2-4 hours April-December - hours are flexible

Volunteer Service Activities: 

Engage visitors by volunteering as an interpreter (docent or guide) at all the Historic Sites. Volunteers provide thematic tours to a variety of groups including schools, families, and other groups. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Become familiar with the Historic Sites
  • Provides accurate interpretation.
  • Clearly communicates and is engaging to the audience.
  • Manages groups of all ages.
  • Reads an audience and adapts the tour accordingly
  • Display a welcoming and helping attitude to visitors

Wednesday-Saturday 11a-4p -  May-October - hours may be flexible

Volunteer Service Activities: 

Provide visitors with information by answering guest questions, giving directions, assist in the security of the Museum by keeping a watchful eye on the exhibits and by having knowledge of the Museum safety procedures and policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Put visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs
  • Survey guests on their experience by using provided resources
  • Become familiar with the galleries and exhibits at the Muskegon Heritage Museum
  • Monitor the safety of the sites and their visitors
  • Communicate effectively with MHM Site Manager and Volunteer Coordinator to report any issue or incident
  • Assist with programs and events as needed

American Red Cross - Oceana Site

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated station sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide support for preventative healthcare services by assisting in the collection and management of necessary healthcare products. 

Time Commitment: Minimum of one 6-8 hour shift per month - to stay active

Volunteer Service Activities: 

To provide excellent and enthusiastic customer service to enhance the blood donor experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet donors, explain the donation process and assist their the blood donation process
  • Manage donor flow at temp taking, screen donors for permitted access
  • Provide donors with relevant information and answer questions as necessary
  • Provide customer service to donors in the Hospitality Area
  • Report possible adverse post-donation physical reactions to staff
  • Set up and maintain cleanliness in reception, hospitality, and donor areas as requested
  • Work with collections team supervisor, or charge staff, to match donor’s blood type
  • Promote upcoming donation information
  • Make reminder/cancellation calls and reschedule donor appointments

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health AmeriCorps Seniors” will serve at designated station sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide services to clients resulting in greater access to healthy food and increased food security and help to provide other basic needs.

Time Commitment: Varies and Flexible - Minimum of 2 hours per month

Volunteer Service Activities: 

  • Assist in maximizing access to food and nutritional information through Food Truck support and other collections/donation activities
  • Assist in maximizing access to other basic needs
  • Assist in outreach activities to educate the community in health, education, and income stability opportunities
  • Assist in non-campaign funding office support

American Red Cross - Oceana Site

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: “Allies for Health RSVP” will serve at designated stations sites in Muskegon and Oceana Counties to help the capacity of the agency to provide support for preventative disaster services by education and installation of necessary fire alarms. 

Time Commitment: TBD

Volunteer Service Activities: 

To assist local fire department, and your community, to educate and install free smoke alarms to residents to help reduce fire fatalities by 25%.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with local fire department
  • Inspect home smoke alarms
  • Install up to three smoke alarms per home
  • Attend necessary free training
  • Learn necessary information to educate the operation and safety of alarm

To assist the local fire department, and your community, by educating youth through local programs and within schools to help reduce fire fatalities by 25%.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the local fire department, and community leaders
  • Present preparedness education materials to grade school children in a school setting
  • Attend free training

Goodwill Industries of West Michigan - Oceana Site

Service Activity: Providing Services

Description of Allowable Service Activities: Economic Opportunity and Income Stability RSVP volunteer will provide direct service or support at non-profit organizations through a variety of tasks include office support, conducting community outreach, public event staffing/support, research, and distributing educational materials, in addition to providing assistance to the community to support initiatives that drive economic & income stability.

Time Commitment: Varies and Flexible - Minimum of 4 hours

Volunteer Service Activities: 

Provide support to expand and enhance the organization’s ability to aid hundreds of low-income community members so that they may maximize their income captures.

Key Responsibilities:

Greeter
  • Greets clients and verifies appointment times. Provide initial paperwork critical to getting the tax process started

Tax Preparer
  • Prepares and electronically files tax returns using on-line tax preparation software

     

Quality Reviewer
  • Reviews returns to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency
Interpreter
  • Translates information from non-English speaking clients to volunteer tax preparers
