What happens when families roll up their sleeves, tackle a challenge, and discover something new together?
Through United Way of the Lakeshore's Family STEM Program, we're helping bring hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math experiences to elementary students and their families.
In partnership with Whitehall and Montague schools, we're piloting Family Engineering Nights, where families work together to explore new ideas, solve problems, and discover the fun of STEM.

Family Engineering Nights bring K–5 students and their families together for interactive, age-appropriate STEM challenges.
Using Family Engineering: An Activity and Event Planning Guide, United Way supports participating schools in creating engaging experiences where families can work as a team, test ideas, build solutions, and learn through hands-on activities.
It's an opportunity for children and their families to explore STEM together in a welcoming environment, with plenty of room for creativity, curiosity, and discovery.

Volunteer with us!
You don't need to be an engineer or a STEM expert to make a difference.
Volunteers help create a welcoming, engaging experience for students and families. Opportunities may include:
Event Setup: Help prepare activity stations, materials, and spaces before families arrive.
Small-Group Facilitation: Encourage families as they work through activities and challenges.
Event Cleanup: Help pack up materials and return the space to its original setup.
Whether you're a student, professional, educator, or community member who enjoys working with families, we'd love to have your support.
BUILDING SOMETHING TOGETHER

Together, we're creating opportunities for families to explore STEM, connect through learning, and discover what's possible.
As the pilot develops, we'll share more about the families engaged, the experiences created, and what we learn along the way.
