Help a Child Become a Stronger Reader
Become an Early Literacy Mentor
Two hours a week can make a lasting difference for a young reader.
United Way of the Lakeshore's Early Literacy Mentor Program connects caring community volunteers with young students who need a little extra support building their reading skills.
You don't need to be a teacher. You don't need special experience. You just need two hours a week during the school day and a desire to help a child succeed.

See Early Literacy Mentoring in Action
See what happens when volunteers, schools, and students come together to help young readers build their skills and confidence.
Just Two Hours a Week. A Big Impact.
Schools identify students who would benefit from additional reading support and provide mentors with a structured reading plan aligned with their curriculum.
During each two-hour volunteer shift, mentors work one-on-one with multiple students for approximately 15 minutes each.
Students receive this additional reading practice throughout the school week, with mentors following the same structured routine so students receive consistent support no matter which volunteer is with them that day.
Students typically participate for 10–12 weeks before their progress is assessed. As their skills grow, students may be ready to graduate from the program!
As an Early Literacy Mentor, you'll:
Commit to approximately two hours one day each week
Work with students one-on-one during the school day
Follow an easy-to-use, scripted reading program provided by the school
Receive the training and guidance you need to get started
Help young readers practice skills, build confidence, and grow
No teaching experience is required.
