Walk-In Medical Clinic
Mission for Area People’s free Walk-In Medical Clinic gives uninsured and underinsured Muskegon County residents fast, no-cost access to primary care. In partnership with Love in Action, MAP provides physician visits documented in the Athena EMR (privacy protected through Love in Action). An on-site Access Health community health worker (CHW) meets with every patient after the exam to enroll them in coverage when eligible, connect them to a permanent medical home, coordinate referrals, and offer health coaching.
To remove remaining cost barriers, MAP’s medical fund helps patients obtain essential labs, prescriptions, and durable medical equipment. The clinic also links patients to MAP’s wrap-around supports (food, clothing, transportation aid), reducing preventable ER use and improving follow-through on care plans. Since launching in March 2024, the clinic has delivered timely visits and education, reconnected patients to coverage and primary care, and financed needed meds and labs when patients couldn’t afford them.
Alignment with United Way mission/priorities
This program directly advances United Way of the Lakeshore’s Healthy Families/Individuals → Access to Care priority by increasing access to physical and social services and addressing gaps and disparities for ALICE households. By eliminating upfront costs, providing CHW navigation, and securing ongoing medical homes, the clinic helps working families stay healthy enough to work and meet basic needs—delivering on United Way’s mission to build thriving, equitable communities and its bold goal of helping more families achieve stability.
