Senior Transportation Program

AgeWell Services’ Senior Transportation Program provides safe, no-cost, door-to-door, non-emergency medical rides for low-income adults age 60+ in Muskegon County. Riders are picked up about 30 minutes before their appointment and returned home afterward. The service prioritizes access to essential care—especially hearing and vision—so older adults can keep routine checkups, diagnostic evaluations, and treatments. In the last fiscal year, the program delivered 7,520 rides for 258 older adults, with demand outpacing available capacity. Surveys show strong outcomes: 99% said rides made it easier to reach appointments, 98% said the program helped them continue living independently, and 64% reported improved feelings of loneliness.

Why United Way supports it
Transportation should never stand between an older neighbor and the care they need. This program directly advances our Healthy Families/Access to Care priority and our bold goal to help working families and seniors meet basic needs—particularly the growing ALICE population among older adults. It also leverages our funding to unlock required local match dollars, multiplying impact, and works hand-in-hand with community partners (Senior Resources, LifeCircles PACE, 2-1-1, healthcare providers). Bottom line: reliable rides mean better health, greater independence, and stronger social connection for Muskegon County seniors.
