Muskegon County Senior Hunger Relief Mini-Grant Program

Funded through the Muskegon County Senior Millage, these mini-grants support existing hunger-relief programs serving Muskegon County adults age 60 and older.

Mini-grants are designed to help organizations strengthen, sustain, or expand food access for seniors through programs already in operation.

Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants include:

  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations

  • Schools and educational institutions

  • Government agencies

  • Faith-based organizations

Applicants must already be operating a senior-focused hunger-relief program. New programs or start-up ideas are not eligible at this time.

Eligible programs may include senior food pantries, congregate meal programs, home-delivered or take-home meals, food boxes, meal preparation efforts, senior-focused distribution or delivery services, or gardens and growing programs that distribute food to seniors.

Programs must clearly serve Muskegon County residents age 60 and older.

How Funds Can Be Used

Mini-grant funds may be used for needs tied directly to senior food access, including food purchases, meal or pantry supplies, equipment such as containers or cold storage, transportation and delivery costs, volunteer or staffing support, and infrastructure that helps provide safe, consistent food access for older adults.

Application & Timeline

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed weekly by United Way of the Lakeshore & Muskegon Community Foundation staff.

Funding will remain available until either:

  1. Available grant funds have been fully expended through awarded programs, or

  2. September 30, 2026 has been reached.

Organizations may apply for funding at any point during the funding period while funds remain available.

These mini-grants are also renewable. Once awarded funds have been fully expended and the organization’s short end-of-grant report has been submitted, organizations may reapply for additional funding consideration.

Required Reporting

Because this funding is supported by the Muskegon County Senior Millage, funded organizations must collect basic information for each senior served, including:

  • Birthdate

  • Municipality of residence within Muskegon County

This information is used for required millage reporting and helps demonstrate the impact of senior services across the county.

Organizations that do not currently collect this information can receive support from United Way of the Lakeshore to set up a simple, secure intake or tracking system.
