Charitable Tax Update
United Way of the Lakeshore brings neighbors together across Muskegon, Oceana, and Newaygo counties to improve lives and build stronger communities. United Way focuses on family stability through partnerships, volunteer mobilization,a dn targeted investments in local programs to help families succeed. Every dollar raised stays local, supporting trusted partners and programs that address the most pressing needs on the Lakeshore.
Beginning with the 2026 tax year, new federal tax provisions under the Charitable Act of H.R. 1 create expanded incentives for charitable giving — including gifts to United Way of the Lakeshore.
Under these changes:
Standard deduction filers can now benefit. Individuals who do not itemize may claim an above-the-line charitable deduction of up to $1,000 for single filers or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly for cash gifts to qualified nonprofits.
Itemizers can still deduct charitable gifts, though donations must exceed 0.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI) before deductions apply.
High-income donors may see charitable deduction benefits capped at a 35% tax-benefit rate.
These updates make giving more accessible for many donors while reinforcing the power of thoughtful, community-based philanthropy.
Now is the time to invest in the Lakeshore. By making a gift to United Way of the Lakeshore, you are helping fund programs that create real, measurable change right where you live — while also taking advantage of expanded tax benefits.
Give today. Rally your workplace. Encourage your friends and family to join you. Together, we can strengthen Muskegon, Oceana, and Newaygo counties and ensure every neighbor has the opportunity to thrive.
