TrueMentors
TrueMentors is TrueNorth’s countywide mentoring initiative offering four evidence-informed tracks that wrap caring adults around Newaygo County youth. Two community-based 1:1 matches pair trained volunteers (18+) with youth ages 5–14 for a minimum one-year commitment and at least eight hours together monthly, building trust, skills, and healthy routines. Two school-based small-group models run during the school day to remove transportation barriers: TrueBlue Academy (Newaygo & White Cloud Middle Schools) strengthens self-awareness, communication, and coping skills with support from School Resource Officers; and Lions Together matches local men with high-risk K–1 boys at Newaygo Elementary to practice respect, listening, and self-control.
A third pillar, Parks in Focus (in partnership with the Udall Foundation), connects youth ages 9–18 to nature through photography—via local outings, an overnight, and a weeklong summer immersion—broadening horizons and confidence. Across models, students access new experiences (e.g., Camp Newaygo leadership day, quarterly mentor/mentee gatherings), consistent positive relationships, and a safe space to grow socially, emotionally, and academically.
Alignment with United Way mission/priorities
TrueMentors advances United Way of the Lakeshore’s Youth Success → Family Engagement priority and “whole-school, wrap-around supports” strategy by embedding mentors in schools, partnering with districts and SROs, and providing free, accessible programming tailored to ALICE and at-risk youth. A stable, prosocial adult is a proven protective factor that boosts school connection, improves attendance, and reduces behavior incidents, while skill-building lessons and nature-based learning strengthen resilience and well-being. By mobilizing community volunteers and school partners around students, TrueMentors directly supports United Way’s mission to unite stakeholders, inspire change, and build thriving communities.
