Math Corps

Hope Network’s Michigan Education Corps will place two Math Corps AmeriCorps interventionists at Muskegon Heights Public School Academy—one at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary (grades 4–6) and one at Muskegon Heights Academy (grades 7–8)—to deliver high-impact math tutoring to students below benchmark. Working with pairs or triads for 90 minutes per week, interventionists use scripted, evidence-based lessons that build conceptual understanding, computation, and word-problem solving, all aligned to Michigan Mathematics Standards and designed to prepare students for algebra readiness by 9th grade. Students’ skills are assessed with Mathway three times per year, with ongoing progress monitoring to adjust instruction.

Each school designates an Internal Coach, and an MEC Coaching Specialist provides regular observation and feedback to ensure fidelity and results. The model complements core instruction, targets Tier-2 learners (including students receiving special education or EL services as appropriate), and has a strong track record statewide (e.g., 75% of 631 students met/exceeded growth targets in 2022–23, supported by 25,000 hours of high-dosage tutoring).

Why this supports United Way’s mission/priorities
This program advances Youth Success with a focus on Chronic Absenteeism by delivering individualized small-group supports to academically at-risk students in a district with very high poverty and absenteeism. Consistent tutoring plus mentorship strengthens students’ confidence and school connection—drivers of better attendance and persistence—while closing foundational math gaps that unlock long-term academic progress and economic mobility for ALICE families. The approach is data-driven, scalable, and coordinated with school staff—squarely aligned with United Way’s goal to help more working families thrive.
