Cardinal Elementary Lights On Afterschool

Lights On Afterschool at Orchard View’s Cardinal Elementary serves grades 2–5 in a licensed, safe, after-school and summer setting that extends the school day with hands-on STEAM projects, literacy enrichment, homework support, and social-emotional learning. The program runs Monday–Friday and remains available on early-release days, many non-scheduled breaks, and snow days (as conditions allow), giving families dependable coverage. Staff cultivate strong relationships with students and caregivers through regular communication and family activities.

During summer, Cardinal Camp offers full-day care that keeps learning alive with field trips, outdoor exploration, arts, and teamwork. These experiences broaden students’ horizons and build confidence while keeping them connected to caring adults and peers. Demand is strong—serving about 60–65 students annually—including interest from families outside the district because of the program’s quality and consistency.

Alignment with United Way mission/priorities
The program advances United Way of the Lakeshore’s Childhood Success priorities by providing childcare support, expanding access to quality learning environments, strengthening early literacy, and engaging families in their children’s learning. By offering reliable, enriching care after school and in summer—especially vital for ALICE households—Lights On removes a major barrier to work and stability for parents while boosting students’ academic engagement, social-emotional skills, and school readiness. United Way funding directly elevates quality (e.g., STEAM materials, field trips, staff development), translating the mission—inspire change and build thriving communities—into daily, measurable benefits for Muskegon County families.
