United Way Worldwide Hosts Virtual Kick Off of United We Count, United We Vote
U.S. Women’s Soccer Champion and When We All Vote Co-Chair Megan Rapinoe and DJ William Lifestyle will be live at the event to encourage people to take the census and vote.
United Way Worldwide today announced the launch of a new campaign, United We Count, United We Vote, to mobilize people in communities everywhere in civic engagement and collective action while social distancing. The six month campaign will be kicked off with a May 12 virtual event on Facebook LIVE and YouTube from 3:00-4:00 EDT. As a part of her role as When We All Vote Co-Chair, Megan Rapinoe, U.S. Women’s Soccer Champion, will join the event.
All are invited to attend to hear from Megan Rapinoe, civic leaders and other experts on how to be a champion for your community from home. When We All Vote is a national, nonpartisan nonprofit organization launched by Michelle Obama in 2018 to increase participation in every election. United Way is launching a new partnership with When We All Vote and will invite members to join a Voting Squad Captain Training on May 20th.
"Voting is our duty as citizens. I want my voice to be heard, I want to be an active participant, and I want to have a say in the country I live in. I believe we can ALL have a better life, but in order to do so, we need people in office who will fight for us ALL,” said Megan Rapinoe, U.S. Women’s Soccer Champion and When We All Vote Co-Chair.
Civic engagement is at the heart of United Way‘s mission. For over 130 years, United Way has convened community leaders to solve problems in a non-partisan manner. Our non-partisan leadership role and trusted presence in over 95% of U.S. communities equips United Way distinctly for this civic engagement work.
Today, our role is more important than ever. From May through November, United Way will organize virtual trainings, live-streamed events and calls to action to help people vote and be counted in the census. More than 200 United Ways are leading civic engagement initiatives from building awareness of the U.S. Census to activating voter registration across the country.
“Responding to the health and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, all individuals need to be civically engaged. As our policymakers take action to directly help workers, children and families, it is critical to have an accurate census count to determine where the allocation of federal funds and resources are needed the most,” said Suzanne McCormick, U.S. President, United Way Worldwide. “As we quickly approach hurricane season, an accurate count is equally critical for emergency planning, response, preparedness and disaster recovery to help identify where and how much help is needed. We believe that helping people become active in civic society is vital to creating strong, resilient and autonomous communities.”
On May 12 from 3:00-4:00pm ET, the United We Count, United We Vote campaign will kick-off with a virtual launch event on How to Be Civically Engaged during the COVID19 Pandemic on Facebook LIVE and YouTube featuring civic leaders from the U.S. Census Bureau and MTV. Starting at 3:45pm ET, DJ William Lifestyle will play music while people fill out the census and register to vote.
