DTE Energy Summer Youth Employment at United Way

Meet United Way's DTE Summer Youth Employment Workers!

We are happy to have Hailey and Shemya working with us at United Way of the Lakeshore through the DTE program!

Hailey King is a 2016 graduate of Orchard View who is assisting Jodi Nichols with Marketing and Special Events.  She has already been a big help with Ride United follow up and is working on making sure our Golf United event for Oceana County on August 27 is a big success.  She will also be working to increase our online presence and compiling program success stories.  Hailey is moving to Kalamazoo after she completes the DTE program with plans to attend Kalamazoo Valley Community College to earn her Associate’s degree before transferring to Western Michigan University.  She is still deciding on her major but plans to focus on the medical field.

Shemya Gilmore is a 16-year-old Senior from Orchard View High School who is a youth employee affiliated with the DTE Energy Summer Youth Employment Program and working at United Way of the Lakeshore (UWL) this summer. Shemya will be assisting two United Way staff Jana Routt and Nancy Robbins. Her job duties for the summer will involve packing the campaign materials needed for all three Counties. This is a huge project that requires tremendous organizational skills to complete. Shemya is exceptionally organized and will excel in this effort. In addition, she will be assisting with UWL’s social media communications and office assistant projects.

We are delighted to have Shemya back for another summer through the DTE Energy Summer Youth Employment Program. We are also fortunate to have DTE Energy in our community to support this great program and many other programs.

Shemya explains her aspirations, “After I graduate from high school I’m going to college. I haven’t decided on which college yet but I want to go to a four year university. After I receive my bachelor’s degree I would like to take a year off from schooling and join the Peace Corps for a year. There I can do the two things I love the most: travel and help others. Once I am finished with the Peace Corps I would like to return to school and finish the rest of my schooling. My ultimate goal is to become either an OB\GYN or a Pediatric Surgeon.”
